Original Salzburg Christkind

The Salzburger Chrikstkind with his 2 angels.
tradition since 1974
The tradition of the original Salzburg Christkind has existed since the Christmas market began in its current form in 1974.
Once travelling from the new town to the old town in a festive procession, the original Salzburg Christkind now visits the Salzburg Christmas Market together with his 2 angels every Wednesday and Sunday during Advent.
A visit from the Christ Child
Since 2018, the original Salzburg Christkind has greeted visitors on Advent Sundays in front of Salzburg Cathedral. Afterwards, the Christ Child and his angels walk across the Cathedral Square and Residenzplatz and hand out sweet surprises to the children.
Dates on the Sundays in Advent:
Sonntag, 29. November 2026, 16.00 Uhr und
Sonntag 06., 13. und 20. Dezember 2026 um 16.00 Uhr at the cathedral square

Letters to the christ child
The Christkind can also be found on Wednesdays from 4.00 pm at the children's readings under the large Christmas tree on Residenzplatz.
A particular favourite with the little guests: the Salzburg Christ Child helps them fill in their wish lists, which are then sent up into the sky with a balloon.
At an area specially designed for the Christ Child, right next to the beautiful gingerbread baking station. There, the children also have the opportunity to get a photo and a signature from the Christ Child.

Pictures- that go around the world...
Salzburg's first Christkind was Angelika Hutegger, who now runs a stall selling fashionable and traditional winter textiles at the Christmas market. The ‚Christkindl team‘ enchants visitors to the Salzburg Christmas Market with heavenly appearances and makes thousands of children's eyes sparkle. The pictures of the original Salzburg Christkindl in Salzburg's old town go all over the world and are popular photo motifs in the international media.
Every year, a new Christkind and two Engerl are selected as part of an application round. Communicative girls aged 16 and over who have a little acting talent and foreign language skills and are not afraid to recite poems in front of thousands of people can apply from mid-October. As a reward for their Christmas commitment, they can look forward to shining children's eyes and presents.
